It’s a Jungle Out There

‘Jungle Star’ is the latest variety that fails to slake our thirst for ‘Kahlua’.

Three down, one to go. Out of four ‘Kahlua’ bulbs received from Royal Colors this season, not one has turned out to be true to name. The first was a total surprise, and a new cultivar to the eyes of Emaryllis, ‘Pina Colada’. The second at least fell into the cybister/spider category, but has no clear identity, and muddy coloration. Here, the third bulb to bloom turns out to be an old favorite, ‘Jungle Star’. This one is vaguely in the right category, but blooming from a relatively tiny bulb (18.5cm), not the best example of what the typically robust H. (cybister x papilio) cross can do. The last of the four bulbs is putting up a single scape, and within weeks we will know if our thirst for ‘Kahlua’ will be quenched, even if just in part.
