Nothing to boast…

Nothing to boast…

…and nothing as tasty as Kahlua to toast this time out. The first of several bulbs to bloom from a Royal Colors purchase of ‘Kahlua’, and judging by the scape colors and sizes, we may end up with three completely different varieties. This one is truly odd, and not particularly impressive so far. Light substance, and pale color on a mid size bloom that reads pale yellow-green from afar. Up close the rosy flushes become evident, lending an uneven warmth to the uneven flower. Almost certainly, Hippeastrum evansiae is in its lineage, possibly with some H. aglaiae thrown in. In this regards it seems like a throwback to the earliest yellow cultivars like ‘Yellow Pioneer’, ‘Yellow Goddess’, and ‘Lemon Lime’. Since Royal Colors lists ‘Pina Colada’, among its offerings, that seems the likeliest bet. And hey, we have another another sweet, adult beverage name to consider… so maybe not such a leap! Stay tuned as the next scape blooms on healthier roots.
